Tasty ‘90s Tunes

Like Sarah, I traditionally have spent most of my life listening to classic rock like the Beatles, Traffic, Allman Brothers, Aerosmith, and The Stones. I mixed things up a little in college when I went through an Alternative music phase listening to Boston’s alternative station WFNX which turned me on to The Cure, The Furs, Big Audio Dynamite, and The Cocteau Twins.

When I started thinking about my music tastes in the ‘90s, I automatically focused on Grunge bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Sound Garden, all of whom I loved and played to death. But as I dug deeper, I realized I listened to and loved so many other songs and bands.

I remember walking into a record store (back when we had them) and being blown away when I heard Seal’s “Crazy” for the first time. I was utterly thrilled by Madonna’s “Vogue” when I first heard it on the radio, which is how I also learned about Garbage, Dishwalla, Primitive Radio Gods, Sugar Ray, and Smash Mouth. My husband and I played the radio constantly on car trips and at the beach. MTV was still primarily showing music videos in the ‘90s vs. reality TV, although it did bring us The Real World in 1992, so it was another fantastic way to learn about new music.

Sarah’s playlist on my book club page is mostly classic rock and grunge songs, so for the one below, I’ve included some of my fave ‘90s tracks across multiple music genres. Please message me on my contact form with your seminal ‘90s tunes, and I’ll compile another playlist of your favorites. I can’t wait to hear from you but until then, happy listening.
