Check out all the latest and greatest adventures of Sarah, me, and our friends. We’re all about music, nature, books, pets, art, the beach, and connecting with each other.
I’d love to know all about you and what you’re up to and so if there is something special going on in your life, please drop me a line. And if you choose to read my book with your group or find it featured at your favorite bookstore or library, please upload your photo with a detailed caption using the upload form below.
I was so excited to meet with the members of The Riverdale Senior Service’s (RSS) Center for Ageless Living. I did a reading, and then we discussed the writing and publishing process; they asked a lot of interesting questions. We’ll delve more deeply into the answers this summer when I facilitate an intensive creative writing workshop there.
It was such a thrill to have the amazing KRVC Book Club read and discuss my book. Many of these wonderful ladies keep asking me when the sequel is coming out. All I can say is, “I’m working on it.” KRVC is my neighborhood’s local development corporation, which engages in a wide range of community volunteer, charitable, cultural, and small business outreach activities. https://www.facebook.com/krvcbronx/
Here, I am at my meet and greet and reading at KRVC up here in Riverdale, which was such a wonderful evening.
Here, I am with Laura Levine-Pinedo, who not only plans community arts events but amazing charity programs that I am thrilled to be part of.
This is me with Carlos, who worked as an intern with me in the mid-90s when he was a college freshman and I was the beauty director at YM magazine. Amazing how time flies!
I was honored to have such a terrific turnout, and Laura Levine-Pinedo, who planned the event, catered the whole affair and made the space look so lovely.
Participating in a Zoom book club discussion on The Rise, Fall, and Return of Sarah Mandelbaum was so exciting. We had so much fun discussing the book and everyone’s favorite characters. Penny always wins most popular, while Holt and Jax were other favorites. If your book club decides to read my book, I’d be thrilled to join your discussion. Please fill out this contact form, and we’ll pick a date. Can’t wait! https://carakagan.com/contact/
I may be a Bronx girl like Sarah, but I’m madly in love with Southern California and its glorious beaches. I was recently there with my wonderful husband, Andrew, and we couldn’t get enough sun, sand, and surf. We were lucky enough to go to Crescent, Laguna, and Crystal Cove beaches in Laguna, plus Malibu, and Venice beaches. The light, the air, the colors, the water, the sand. They’re all somehow a bit more magical than the beaches on the East Coast, at least to me.
I haven’t been able to visit the canals in Venice, Italy, yet, but I sure love the canals in Venice, CA. They are so peaceful and charming—a truly lovely place to stroll.
This sophisticated world traveler is my good buddy J.P. who happens to have great taste in books. 😉 We met in 1977 at Camp Modin in Canaan, Maine, one of my favorite places in the whole world that is also the inspiration for Camp Skowhegan, where Sarah and Esme spend many a happy summer.
Everyone, this is Odell. We met when I lived in Oakland; he is a really talented musician who plays percussion and sings with several projects. Meanwhile, his company Patton Productions creates showcases for lesser-known artists to help get them gigs at better-known clubs in the Bay Area. Check him out at https://www.pattonproduction.com/about-us.
Me with my buddy Susan who graciously hosted my book launch party in June. She also happened to have read every single word of this book at least 500 times. Sarah and I couldn’t have made it this far without her.
At that party, I did my very first reading. Nerve-wracking but exciting. I never realized how hard it is to read out loud.
I did my very first book signing that night. Wow! What an honor. So grateful people actually wanted me to sign their book.
Me with high school buddies Karen and Genevieve. I couldn’t have been any happier to have them there that night.
Here I am with my pal Rhonda who was also one of the proofreaders of my galleys—a crucial part of getting published. Cannot ever thank her enough.
My college buddy Ellen was there, too. I am the luckiest girl with the most amazing friends.
Susan, another buddy Ellen, and my pal Julie enjoying the delicious canapés Susan prepared.
Awe-inspiring Azaleas at The New York Botanical Garden. After a very wet and rainy April and early May, spring has finally sprung in NYC.
Me with Gish Jen, one of my all-time favorite authors at an event for Behind the Book, an amazing non-profit organization that partners with schools in NYC and the Bronx to provide literary programs to more than 1,500 pre-K-12th Grade students each year.
The Sarah Mandelbaum swag has arrived thanks to Jeff Rosenblum of Ultimate Impressions. Stay tuned for contests, freebies, and giveaways.
The breathtaking Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Gardens. So worth a visit if you’re ever in the Big Apple in spring.
Mouse pre-ordered her copy of The Rise, Fall, and Return of Sarah Mandelbaum. I hope you will too!
My buddy Karen Hudson and her Hudson River Band paid tribute to the immortal Linda Ronstadt in an amazing evening of rock ‘n roll.
